One of the primary reasons Ryder wanted to attend Castle Hills was the opportunity to participate in sports in a Christian environment. He was primarily interested in football and basketball initially. After learning how they break them out, he added cross country, track and even tennis. The school also has soccer (mixed gender) and volleyball.
Coach Wentrcek is the Athletic Director and Varsity Football Coach. Our experience with him is great! He does what is right for the players, yet holds them accountable on the football field. Coach Wentrcek has an excellent team of coaches who help develop the players, not just on the field but in their faith. He’s worked with Ryder when he had injuries or strains to his body from participating in multiple sport practices. Coach Wentrcek also modified Ryder’s schedule so he could fit everything into his day while still allowing him to be academically successful. Our family has certainly enjoyed working with Coach Wentrcek! He is the model for the staff to emulate at the school.
The program hadn’t won a single game for 3 years when Ryder was in his freshman year. In fact, there was only a handful of players who came out to play on the Six-man football team. Ryder reached out and pulled in a few other students to help keep them on the field his freshman season. However, in 2021 we saw a tremendous turnaround! We had a significant boost in players and ended up pulling out a District Championship in dramatic fashion. In 2022, the team was on track to win back-to-back District Championships until Ryder was involuntarily withdrawn from the school. They lost because their extra point kicker was no longer on the team.
This is Ryder’s favorite sport. While he was successful on the team, there isn’t much to say here. They had good games and bad games. Ryder’s basketball coach is no longer at the school. We understand the newly hired coach has shown significant improvement in the team’s play.
Ryder did well in both of these sports. He went to the TAPPS state competition in both. The coaches knew enough to keep the kids competitive but was not able to really grow and develop Ryder in specific events.
